William M. Hurt (born March 20, 1950) is an American actor. He received his acting training at the Juilliard School, and began acting on stage in the 1970s. Hurt made his film debut as a troubled scientist in the science fiction feature Altered States (1980), for which he received a Golden Globe nomination for New Star of the Year. He subsequently landed the leading role as a sleazy lawyer in the well-received film noir Body Heat (1981).
One of the top leading men of the '80s, William Hurt is notable for his intensity and effective portrayals of complex characters. Although born in Washington, D.C., Hurt had already seen much of the world by the time he was grown, as his father worked for the State Department.
He was still virtually unknown when he starred in Ken Russell's 1980 off-kilter classic Altered States, which was a financial and artistic success. Hurt went on to become one of the 1980s biggest stars, with the sultry Body Heat (1981), the nostalgic The Big Chill (1983), the gayly political Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985), the hearing impaired Children of a Lesser God, and the hilarious Broadcast News (1987).
\William Hurt was virtually unrecognizable on the recent Golden Globes telecast when the cameras panned to the "Damages" nominee.
